Grammar › Particles › も
も — "also / too"
The "me too" particle. It adds "as well" to whatever it marks — and quietly takes the place of は, が or を rather than piling on top.
The short version
も means "also / too / as well". Swap it in where は, が or を would go to say "this one, in addition". In a negative sentence the same も becomes "not… either".
私も。 — me too
彼も先生です。 — he's a teacher too (も replaces は)
"Also / too"
Attach も to the thing that's being added to the picture — another person, another item, another day.
私も結構好きです
I like it too, quite a lot. (も = me as well)
私もそうだね。
Same for me / me too. (agreeing with も)
今日もありがとうね
Thanks today as well. (今日も = today too, like other days)
Watch out
も replaces は/が/を — it doesn't stack on them. "I like it too" is 私も好き, never 私はも / 私がも. But も does attach after に, で and と: 東京にも行く ("go to Tokyo too").
| Plain | With も ("too") |
|---|---|
| 私は | 私も |
| 映画が好き | 映画も好き |
| これを買う | これも買う |
| 東京に行く | 東京にも行く |
🗣 も after a number = "as many as". Put も after a quantity and it stresses how surprisingly much: 3杯も飲んだ ("I drank as many as three cups"). In the negative it flips to "not even one".
