Grammar › Particles › で
で — place & means
The "setting" particle: where an action happens and how — the tool, the vehicle, the language you do it with.
The short version
で marks the place where an action happens and the means it happens by. Think of it as the backdrop and tools of the verb: at the café, by bus, in Japanese.
家で作る — make it AT home (place of action)
バスで行く — go BY bus (means)
Where the action happens
When something is done at a location, that location takes で.
家で梅酒を作れます。
You can make plum wine at home. (で = where you make it)
The means or method
Same particle marks how — the vehicle, tool, material or language used to do the thing.
バスで30分ぐらいだったのね
It was about 30 minutes by bus. (で = by that means)
簡単な日本語で話をしていきます
I'll talk in simple Japanese. (で = using that language)
Watch out
で (doing) vs に (being / arriving). This is the classic mix-up. Use で where an action takes place, に for existence or a destination: 家で食べる (eat at home — an action) but 家にいる (be at home — just existing there). See the に page.
🗣 で also opens a lot of casual sentences. A sentence-starting で、 ("so…", "and then…") is one of the most common fillers you'll hear in conversation — the same character, doing conversational glue rather than marking a place.
