On the go

Learn Japanese while driving, walking or commuting

By Mariano Matayoshi · building Wakatta, still learning Japanese

The time you spend driving, walking or on the train is good listening time. You can't read a transcript or look up words then, and you don't need to. Listen now, review later.

While you drive: just listen

Pick an episode before you start. Episodes play one after another, so you don't need to touch your phone. Or set the episode to repeat, and hear it again on the way back. Keep your eyes on the road: if a sentence goes past you, let it go.

On foot or on the train: mark what you missed

When you're not driving, one tap on “I got lost” keeps the sentence you just heard, with its audio. On iPhone, the button is also on the lock screen and in the Dynamic Island, so you don't need to open the app.

Later: review it

At home, open the app. The sentences you marked are waiting in review, each with its audio and a short explanation. Look up the words, loop the line, and fill in the blank by listening.

What to listen to

Choose shows a little easier than what you can read. With no transcript in front of you, listening is harder than reading. Shows made for learners, with slow and clear speech, work best on the road.
