Translations
Japanese podcasts, with a translation under each line
In Wakatta, each line of a podcast transcript can show its translation right under the Japanese, in your app's language. Turn it on in Aa. Show it under the line that is playing, or under every line.
What it looks like
These are real lines from podcasts in Wakatta, with the English translation the app shows under them:
| Japanese | Translation | Podcast |
|---|---|---|
| ね、温泉で有名な町、大分県。 | You know, Oita Prefecture, a town famous for hot springs. | Japanese podcast for beginners |
| やってないわけではないのね。 | It's not like they don't do it. | Nihongo con Teppei 波! |
| すべてはボキャブラリーのため。 | Everything is for vocabulary. | Japanese podcast for beginners |
Two ways to show it
- Current line: the translation shows only under the line that is playing. Your eyes stay on the Japanese, and the translation is there when you need it.
- All lines: every line has its translation under it. Good for a second pass, or to read an episode before you listen.
Use it to check, not to read along
If you read the translation while you listen, you stop listening. A better way: listen to a line first, decide what you think it means, then look. If you were right, move on. If not, play the line again, now that you know what to listen for.
Loop a line — replay any line and shadow the speaker
In your language, not only English
The translation comes in the language your app uses: Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Russian and the others. Many episodes already have an English translation. For other languages, the first time someone opens an episode, the translation is made in a few seconds and saved, so the next person gets it at once.
What to know
- Translations are made by machine. They are good for checking the meaning of a line. For a word or a grammar point, hold the word or use Explain.
- For now it works on podcasts only, not on YouTube videos or your own audio.
- Sometimes a translation is not available for an episode. When that happens, the app says so.
